The local council in Almaty has now declared one week of National Celebration in Honour of the Glorious Defenders of the Fatherland and a further day of mourning for its dead fans. “Gaffer” Spratt has lifted the season long sex and alcohol ban as the team will be allowed let their hair down this Friday in the, er, exclusive Redz Nite Club. No doubt this will mean copious amounts of both this weekend for the victorious players. Rumours that Rio Ferdinand has been drafted in to organise the post season party have not been denied by “Gaffer”...

9 DIE AS ALMATY CELEBRATE FIRST TITLE
reported by Jeremy "Scoops" Sweetnam...
Fanatical Almaty Athletic fans spilled onto the streets of the country's second city last night as the boys in blue clinched their first ever title at the hands of hapless Whitfords. In a delightful show of support the natives crammed onto the city's main street and fired multiple rounds from their Kalashnikovs into the air in celebration. A heavy army presence and a more restrained approach to victory resulted in a mere 9 fatalities amidst the rapturous scenes. Indeed authorities must be pleased that the death count was considerably down on the bloodbath of 2004 when Astana Astros won their fourth Central Asian Gypsy Clubbing Title.
In a tense evening, Almaty ultimately romped to a comfortable 7-0 victory and that, along with Slievenamon’s draw last week (which meant they didn't have to rely on those useless Citco feckers who lost 4-1 last night), was enough to secure the league in some style. Once again Almaty started without Morgan 'Who Are Ya' Foley and Jim 'London’s Calling' Butler. Joining them on the sidelines was Alex '56 Days' O'Donovan, who is keen to extend his injury free run by, er, not playing again. Ever. Despite the absentees the line up was a familiar one, with Gav 'Czech Mate' Jeffery leading the line, SP in the middle, and “Tiger” O'Connell, “Gaffer” Spratt, and James “Kazakhstan’s Next Top Model” Galvin at the back. Billy “What About Me” Murphy completed the seven. Again Almaty started tentatively, and, with the game delicately poised, Safehands was called into action twice to repel long range efforts from Whitfords. Soon, though, “Tiger” and “Gaffer” tightened up and Safehands was not called upon again. Instead Almaty gradually took control of the game; and the season. Closely following the script of previous weeks, they went on to miss a series of guilt edged chances. Particularly culpable were Ant “Two Left Feet” Spratt and Gav "Did the Czech Bounce?” Jeffery, who both spurned easy opportunities.
It was no surprise, however, when a determined SP finally slammed in the first mid way through the first half. Almaty continued to press and grabbed a deserved second before half time. Whitfords were a shadow of the team that did near terminal damage to Almaty’s title charge mid-season and, as news filtered through of Slievenamon's predicament, Almaty relaxed in the second half and thoroughly destroyed their opponents. “A Score is a Score” Jeffery grabbed another three, SP one and “Gaffer” one as the Kazakh maestros ran riot in a flawless display of champagne showboating, which included at least two back heeled finishes.
Almaty Athletic 3 Gleibenhagg FC 4
Spot the sulk!
Almaty went into tonight’s game knowing that at a minimum a point was required to keep their title ambitions within their own hands; sadly this was not to be. Keith “Kinky Games” SP was out with “a pain in his chest” and his loss was to prove crucial. In his absence Dr Phil was recalled to add a bit of class to the team. Long term absentee Morgan “who are you?” Foley was also unavailable, as well as Jim “drinks like a fish” Butler, who was going cold turkey after a heavy weekend of abuse. The team lined up with Safehands in goal, a back three of James G, Tadhg and Dr. Phil, Alex in midfield and Gav up top. Ant and Billy started on the bench.
The game started at a high pace and as is typical of Almaty’s season so far they conceded an early goal. Gliebenhagg’s striker found space on the left and curled a right footed effort into top corner given Safehands no chance. The Hagg’s doubled their lead five minutes later when a strong shot was handled like a hot potato by Safehands. The ball fell to the Hagg’s striker who duly turned and slotted home for their second. Disaster was to strike again five minutes later when the Hagg’s made it three. As Almaty pressed they got suckered on the counter-attack. The Hagg’s forward broke free on the right finished beautifully again with the aid of the post; and again giving Safehands no chance. The fourth came shortly afterwards when the Hagg’s striker received the ball with his back to the goal; swiveled and slotted home to the bottom corner.
Despite the four goals conceded the Hagg’s were not the only team in the game. Almaty played with pace and determination but lacked the killer touch up front. Chance after chance went a begging. In a key moment James G threaded a great through ball to the oncoming Spratt who was cynically taken out by the Hagg’s defender. This was the first of many dirty challenges by men from Gliebenhagg. Alas the little gay referee signaled only for a free kick. No yellow? And no penalty? Crouchy nearly took full advantage but the resultant free kick cannoned off the woodwork. Almaty did manage to pull one back before half time when Gav “got the ball, turned and shot low to the keeper’s left… after missing umpteen chances beforehand!!!” Quote unquote.
The Almaty players took stock at half-time; whilst somewhat dejected there was a feeling among the group that a comeback could be on the cards. The only thing holding them back was the pre-season training most players had undertaken before the game. They would have to play the second half on reserves.
The second half began in the same vein as the first: a high-paced game with a lot of dirty tackles. Tempers boiled over when another bad tackle by Hagg’s baldy striker resulted in Tadhg raising his hands (“you just can’t do that, the players know, when you raise your hands etc. etc…”) to the little twat. The altercation resulted in both players being sin binned. However, this was to work to Almaty’s advantage as the game was now more open. Almaty fans were left wondering whether or not it was to be their night when Dr Phil rounded the keeper only to slot the ball wide of the open goal. Almaty’s cause was helped further when the ref finally made a decision and sin binned another Hagg’s player for petulance. A breakthrough came when a ball was laid off to Spratt on the right hand side who drilled a low shot into the bottom corner; his first of the season! The second followed shortly after some good work from Alex saw him slip the ball past the oncoming keeper to Spratt who guided the ball towards the net and was ultimately knocked in by the Hagg’s defender – they all count. 4-3! Despite huge pressure Almaty were unable to secure the fourth in what would have been a memorable comeback. A man of the match display by the Hagg’s keeper saw him produce some great saves to deny Almaty.
Tempers flared again at the end when Jer “Handbags” Sweetnam was bowled over for the second time by the baldy c*nt of a forward. After much shaping and dishing the handbags were put away and the final whistle was blown.
Working on the assumption that Slievenamon won their game the two sides are now level on points but Slievenamon have a much better goal difference. The last day of the season will see Almaty play Whitfords and Slievenamon play Citco. It is fairly safe to assume that Citco will roll over like a pack of pansies leaving Almaty with only pride to play for after losing 4-0 to Whitfords earlier on in the season.
Dejected Almaty players!

Week 12: Almaty Athletic 4 Pints 2
Almaty Athletic consolidated their grip on top-spot in another night of drama at the CIT Astropitch yesterday. Safehands Sweetnam made it back from Kilkenny so Gaffer was able to stay home to study for his European Computer Driving License. Axel Foley was the only other absentee, either working or on holiday or maybe on a working holiday.
Gav "Crouchy" Jeffery started on the bench with a view to unleashing him on an unsuspecting defence, while James "Insane Skill" Galvin was too traumatised by a recent stalking to start. Billy and Jim started at full-back, SP in the middle, Middle-Aged Mutant Ninja Turtle Alex in midfield and the versatile Tadhger up front.

Since Pints bottled out of the first game, Almaty were not sure what to expect, but at least one of the Pints players looked familiar.. former Almaty striker John "Billy's Bro" Murphy lined out for the yellow-clad opposition..
Almaty tried to start patiently and get the passing game going but the fluency was lacking. There were a few half-chances, blazed over by Jim and Alex, before eventually the breakthrough came. Alex won the ball in midfield in typical bustling fashion, he surged through the middle and managed to retain composure and finish comfortably for a fine individual goal.
Almaty haven't had much luck this season and so it proved again tonight. A harmless effort from a Pints player caught a wicked deflection from one of the lads, and it looped into the far corner. 1-1, against the run of play. Almaty continued to try and play football and should have regained the lead just before half-time when great play by Gav found Lamps in a good position in the inside left-channel, but Lamps displayed no composure whatsoever and snatched at the chance. The stupid cunt.
Half-time came and went. Keep plugging away was the message. Galvin won the ball in defence and embarked on a trademark, insanely skilful run at the heart of the Pints defence before being cynically taken out of it. Grĕgôrçzs reached for the card and the Pints player departed with a torrent of abuse for our socio-economically disadvantaged refereeing friend. "Thank you!" said Grĕgôrçzs.
Despite the grief, the ref only left him off the pitch for about 29 seconds. Fortunately, this was enough time for Almaty to press home the advantage. Good play on the left eventually saw the ball squared to Billy. He seemed to have taken one touch too many, but he eventually slotted it past the advancing keeper to notch his first of the campaign. That leaves just Gaffer yet to score this season! Even Safehands has managed one.
With the breakthrough secured, Almaty relaxed and began to produce better football. Pints tired and Almaty could ping the ball about a bit more. The critical third goal came when Crouchy and Lamps linked up. Crouchy stepped over a ball from defence, Lamps took it forward before playing Crouchy in, and he pinged it home from an acute angle. There was some doubt about the goal but Crouchy was adamant and Grĕgôrçzs was convinced.
It was plain sailing from here on in. "Crouchy" continued his quest for the Golden Sock award by grabbing his second. SP fired in a rasper from distance, the keeper spilled it, and after a brief search, "Crouchy" located the loose ball and accepted the gift.
Pints grabbed a consolation at the death when Grĕgôrçzs lost the plot. Billy smacked an attempted clearance off Lamps' hand, which was at his side, from a distance of about 1 foot. Grĕgôrçzs pointed to the spot. "In my country, this is, how you say, foul? Nyeeeeeeeeeeesssssssssss..." he said in broken, hesitant English. Alex stepped up to take the spotter but in the end left it for the Pints striker. He scored, Grĕgôrçzs blew the whistle, but if it comes down to goal difference the immigration authorities will paying our Eastern Amigo a visit...
So Almaty top the table with two games to go. Squeaky bum time...
PS The night was marred after when the thundering cunt of a groundsman made Alex, Jim and Jer stand around in the rain for 15 minutes before he opened up the athletics track so we could retrieve Pro Tiempo #2. It was worth it though. Those balls could be the secret weapon that sees Almaty emerge victorious in two weeks time...

Match 11: Almaty Athletic 1 Slievenamon 0
...yes they do!
Report by Jeremy "3 Steaks" Sweetnam
After a controversial week of recrimination and unseemly public finger pointing, Almaty returned to the scene of last week’s humiliating capitulation to restate their title credentials with a supreme defensive display, which saw them scoop full points from this competitive and highly entertaining encounter with top of the table Slievenamon.

Having already defeated the league’s pacesetters this season, there was a quiet confidence about Almaty last night. Alex “Robbie Savage” O’Donovan was banished to the bench after last week’s misdemeanours (“I was doing an extended warm up” my arse), whilst Tadhg “I love my D.S.” O’Connell lined up at the centre of the back three with Antony “Jesus Christ Ant, that’s horrendous-are you sure you don’t have a medical condition*” Spratt and Jim “pre match pizza“ Butler on either flank. SP, back from his German adventures, started in the middle and “Crouchy” once again led the line. Billy “I actually was doing an extended warm up” Murphy started on the bench. Alas the silky skills of James “Kanu” Galvin and the defensive grit of Morgan “Axel” Foley were still notably absent.
* © Dawson, after a handful of positively nuclear releases from the “Gaffer” at pre-match poker the previous night
It was obvious from the start that this one was going to be like a Lee Chapman relationship, a hard fought affair. With nothing asked for or given, and most of the play condensed into the middle of the park, every missed half chance missed would be rued. Indeed the first half was notable for little, with Almaty perhaps a little unlucky not to be leading at the break. “Crouchy”, in particular, might have had a least one, but in truth neither side could really have much complaint about. There were brief signs of the traditional slick passing interplay between Alex, Lamps and Gav, but overall it was the Almaty defence that shone.
Half time brought with it the usual gibberish about passing and moving, going long, getting tight, keeping tight, going short, shooting early, careless shooting, and the weekly appeal against losing concentration. In the race to have the last word I think it was one of “Robbie Savage” O’Donovan, “I didn’t have any pizza” Butler, or “I love holding my D.S.” O’Connell…
Anyway, the second half commenced as the first had ended, with few chances and stern uncompromising defending. To be fair to Sleivenamon, they were hard but fair. They couldn’t be blamed for the ridiculously high-pitched referee, who sounded sort of like Johnson Keane on helium (“Noooooo waaaaaaaaay, ba, go way outa that, Alex ya langer, you fell over ‘im!”), waving away claims for a number of clear free kicks.
Slievenamon pressed hard and only a fine save from “Safe Feet” Sweetnam prevented them taking the lead but it was at the other end that the deadlock was finally broken. For the umpteenth time the ball was played long to “Crouchy’s” feet (who, for once this season, was dwarfed by Paul bloody O’Connell at centre back), and he held it up neatly before releasing “Now more Robbie Keane than Robbie Savage to be fair” O’Donovan with an exquisitely timed through ball.
O’Donovan slipped it to the left of the on rushing keeper and hooked his foot around the ball to slot home as “OK it was two slices” Butler arrived on the scene like, er, an express train to join in the celebrations in a most David May-like manner…
And then for the remaining 15 minutes, Almaty produced a fine rear guard defensive performance to completely shut out a forlorn and frustrated Sleivenamon. Special mention must go to Tadgh “I love getting naked with my D.S.” O’Connell, who produced a display of interceptions, tackling and all around shackling that has not been seen of a Paddy since the Black Pearl single-handedly did a job on Robbie Baggio all those years ago in the Giant’s Stadium.
Indeed the only real chance of substance was to come in the dying minutes when Butler, wiping the pizza from his mouth, played the proverbial hospital pass to the startled “D.S. and I are not lovers” O’Connell. In stole the tricky, Sleive striker and out came “Safe Hands” as the ball was slipped to his right. Cue slow motion head in hands moment as the ball spun just wide…
So Almaty are now right back in the hunt for silverware. Indeed full points from their remaining games could see them at last claim the title – but with last week’s misery still fresh in the mind, nobody is taking anything for granted…

Junior Almaty auditor James "Excel" Galvin, in frustration at missing a sizeable chunk of the Almaty campaign, has audited the league table and come up with the following startling findings:

Comeuppance Pie
To show what good sports we are here at Almaty Athletic, this week's match report comes from some geezer up in Citco... but before we hand over to him, it must be pointed out that Almaty were missing SP, Galvin and Dr Phil, then we lost Morgan in the hours before the kick-off. Of those that turned up, Jim could barely move due to a dodgy neck/shoulder/back, Alex had the flu, Gav was hungover still from a weekend on the sauce, and Gaffer and Tadhg were just back from a week in Vegas!! Throw in the worst refereeing display ever, some outrageously flukey toe-bogs, and pre-match hubris from Almaty, this game was a car crash waiting to happen... But we're not bitter.
Anyway, let them enjoy their moment...

After nine pre-season warm up games Citco FC kicked off their Astro League campaign with an impressive 3-2 win over a rather lack luster Almaty Athletic. Five goals, two Duggan’s, one sin bin, a frustrating keeper and a winning toe poke of doom decided a highly competitive encounter.
Labeled the whipping boys, Citco entered the game realising the self professed best team in the league would go all out to secure an early lead. This however did not occur thanks to a rock solid defence of Duggan, O’Mahony and Mark “Mini” Dawson. Dawson, who took exception to this name, led the charge and putting Alex "made of steel" O'Donovan quickly in his pocket.
Citco had the greater of the earlier chances, asking questions of an Almaty defense that looked frail from the kick off. After five clean chances Citco took the lead with an Ian Mulvihill left foot strike stunning the Almaty keeper. Almaty were quick to respond with an equaliser from Jim Butler that took a slight deflection. The first half concluded with some questionable referee decisions and a frustrated Almaty leaving the pitch wondering what they are going to do to increase on their already impressive scoring record.
The second half proved a less amicable affair than the first. An already frustrated Almaty played a “headless chicken chasing the ball” approach whilst Citco maintained most of the possession. Almaty’s lone striker proving ineffective against the Citco defence and instead started playing Russian Roulette with Citco’s more capable keeper. A game he lost every time especially when he insanely charged only to collide with the Immovable Mountain. After, while trying to regain his breath, he constantly wasted it by whinging to the Referee. Citco’s calm and sturdy prowess reaped rewards in terms of a second Mulvihill goal.
A wind of change came at this point, Citco 2-1 in front, Almaty noticeably frustrated. A lapse in Citco concentration resulted in a classic equaliser from Tadhg O'Connell against the run of play. Considering their status in the league it was good to see at least one bit of quality from Almaty.
This however did not ease frustrations and O'Mahony quickly learned why the man of steel was the man of steel. Was it the two megs in the first half on him, was it Dawson’s/Duggan’s masterful defending that frustrated, was it the almighty kicking received last week and a dose of the flu. Who knows, however a poor and mistimed tackle led to Mr. O'Donovan’s exit and O’Mahony wondering what good shin guards really are.
Citco pressured a demoralised and lost Almaty for the remainder of the half who no longer looked like dominant league leaders, but more a group of cheerleaders who lost their Pom Poms. The winner coming from John Dinneen and his right big toe with five minutes remaining sealed a famous Citco victory.
The ref’s whistle blew and Citco were congratulated by other league teams on a cracking win. Almaty however went to the trees in search of a phantom ball, waiting until everyone left before bowing out of CIT in shame. On the night the better team won. From here Citco march on in this 5 game season unbeaten and O'Mahony is heading to the ER as his shin really should not look like that.
With Tiger McTadhg’s threat of “does someone want a finger up the bum?” it's funny that the great Almaty were the team that truly got stuffed.
For those interested, the victorious Citco team will be parading around Cork Business Park in an open-top Hertz Courtesy Bus to celebrate the glorious triumph from 9am to 5pm tomorrow (not including morning coffee break, lunch-break and tea-break. Subway will be producing commemorative 3-inch subs (one inch for each of Citco's points in the league) to mark the occasion. And in breaking news, the CEO of Citco Group has announced a day's vacation for all staff world-wide to mark the achievement...

Almighty Almaty sink battle-hardened Codgers
By Scoop Donovan
July 8th, 2008
For the first time this season, Almaty kept a clean shut-out in standing up to and beating the physical challenge of FC Codger who played to a tie the last time the two teams met.
The team started Sweetham tending goal, Defender Espy made his second start of the season at centre back, while Party Boy Billy assumed right de-fense wanting to make it his regular spot as Dr. Phil partnered at left de-fense. After the game Billy admitted he was “a little bit surprised” at being given the start. “But I think we came out with a game plan knowing that they were going to cross the ball, knowing that they had big guys in the air, and I think it paid off. I think we limited their chances a lot, with me and SP cleaning up all the head balls.”
Stand-in Gaffer Jay Butler agreed with this rationale. “When you look at [the Codger] attack, in the last game their attack was free kicks into the box and long throw-ins, so having the big guy Espy in the middle really helps us,” he explained. “He won a lot of headers.” Stand-in Gaffer Jay Butler and possibly still-drunk hip-hop songster Jay-G were on the bench for an offensive power-play later in the ball-game.
The game started very physically with some horrific fouls being committed by The Codger Brigade. Almaty player Alexander was lucky to escape punishment by an over-lenient zebra when he reacted to persistant fouling by FC Codger, and raised fists. The referee kept his cool resolving the situation and awarding a deserved free kick to Almaty. This didn’t stop the hard tackles flying in. In th 18th minute a horrific tackle on Almaty luxury Alexander left him facing the white light in a heap on the ground, but thanks to Almaty funding, Gaffer embezzlement success in Vegas and modern technology, his new titanium tri-bionic legs helped him to shed his Mr. Glass tag and up he leapt, ready for action. But he was immediately substituted by a fearful stand-in gaffer Jay Butler.
Left back Billy-Boy-Murphy was in foul form unveiling a new angry and vengeful side full of ungentlemanly and abusive language that hasn’t been seen before. All and sundry were left agog, even the FC Codger social housing folk at this new angry-man. Sources close to young William say he hasn’t seen much two-way action lately and its affecting his game.
So enough tangents, where were we ? JJ-Jeffery scored the opening goal in the 5th minute, helping Almaty (3-1-1) impose their soccer turf astro game. The tanned man from the Mediterranean latched on to the ball in the inside-left channel and slotted it home with his left foot at the near post into the right net, super-astro-shot.. the goal-tender was a bit suspect and was left stranded at the upper left box.. “That’s got to be a goal of the week candidate,” said Codger coach Robbie the Knacker. “Not just the finish — it was a good finish, he struck it well — but also the turn at midfield, flicking it on to himself and then going into that space.”
FC Codger (4-1-0) in the first half didn’t have many chances to level the contest other than a “John Boy” (knacker from Curraheen), head shot from outside the box, Almaty defence was in full command throughout the first half with Espy of Gardeners World fame adding a much needed physical presence, and Jay ‘I’m just big boned’ Butler putting in another no frills steady performance. Dr. Phil again showed why he is regarded in protestant circles as a good player with an excellent defensive and holding performance.
Yawn, good to get that bit of back slappin out of the way, back to the real play, Alexander put the Almaty Galaxy two to zero on the scoreboard in the 51st minute when Jay-G gave him a cross from the right sideline into the right goalkeeper's area. Alexander controlled it, and brought the afterburners online, engaged past two FC Codgers and hit a left ground shot into the left-centre net for his fifth goal in eight games. It was first assist for Jay-G since the 2007 ALS Cup Championship game against the New Halting Site Poverty.
After jumping out to the comprehensive two goal lead, The Almaty were out to finish the tie. Dr. Phil Smith straight back from his Hollywood sex therapy show got the ball on the right, came inside, ignored Jim’s calls to “look up!” and hit an early strike with the outside of the right foot.. great opportunism, it must be said. Some defensive lapses left Alexander venting his frustration with the defense on one or two occasions but a stout display was on show by all.
Other starlights involved a amateurish UFC style anything goes performance from our slight of height referee; it rained rain as well as fouls; a great save from a free shot by love puppy Jerald ‘sweet like chocolate’ Sweetham; a muddle between Gerry ‘SP’ Daly and Alexander when trying to substitute nearly led to a Codger goal; and a firm frowning from Dr. Phil and Alexander to Jay Butler for saying sorry when he accidentally smacked one of the Codgers in the face. Almaty keeper Love Boy Gerald actually made several good saves in goal.
The Almaty has now earned twenty one points in its last 9 games games (7-1-1). The team is now finding form at its spiritual CIT home this season and maintains its hold on second place in the Astro Conference standings with the league’s joint best record overall (7-1-1, 21 pts.).
With Slievenamon not updating the league table the Almaty retained their league-leading points-per-game average, making their head coach Steiner-Spratt the Leading ALS All-Star Game coach.
The Crew returns to action next Tuesday, July 14th, against Citco Fire at CIT Stadium at 9:00 p.m.

Week 8: Fuzzball 1 Almaty Athletic 5
Resilient Almaty Return To Summit

Almaty had to dig deep last night to get back to winning ways after the desperately disappointing display against Whitfords in Match Day 7. To compound matters, Almaty were shorn of "Dribbling" James Galvin, Jer "Lovehand(le)s" Sweetnam and, in a late withdrawal, Billy "Mad Dog" Murphy. Apparently he forgot he was going to Italy until the day before the game...
Desperate to start well for once, Alex "Geometric Shapes" O'Donovan rallied the depleted squad. Ant "SafeGafferHands" Spratt volunteered to go in goal for the first half, promising a much improved delivery from the back!
Almaty started quite well. Fuzzball were handy enough, a useful blend of "experienced" defenders with two "tricky" forwards. And by "experienced" I mean old fat geezers, and by "tricky" I mean young fit fairly skillful scobies...
Almaty managed to get the passing going quite well, but in the absence of James "Pace" G, we were missing a bit of, er, pace. But Almaty were patient and chances were coming. Gav "Crouchy" Jeffery in particular was getting a hatful of opportunities but the Fuzzball keeper was in inspired form, though he declined to use his hands much. "Safeshins" if you will...
Eventually the breakthrough came, Almaty in scoring first shocker! A good spell of possession and passing saw Alex "Lines" O'Donovan work it to "Lamps" in the inside left channel. "Lamps" squared it to "Crouchy" who clung it in the top right corner from just outside the box.
Almaty never do anything the easy way of course (not counting the walkover against Pints which was, let's face it, fairly easy...) and we managed to fuck up soon after. "Lamps" squandered possession cheaply around the half-way mark allowing a Fuzzball player to make progress up the right. Nonetheless, there looked to be little danger when the little scobie lad let fly from near the touchline, but the ball rocketed past "SafeGafferHands" and nestled in the top corner. A great strike.
Almaty continued to attack and had numerous chances. "Crouchy" hit the post and had more opportunities saved by the keeper.
Another quiet Almaty half-time as the shame kicked in. Alex "Trigonometry" O'Donovan outlined his grand vision for the second half and whatever he said, it worked. Almaty were much hungrier and more urgent. The passing was sharper and chances were coming thick and fast. "Lamps" trademark screamer from wide on the left duly came and went, smashing the inside of the far post and coming out. One of the scobes in the Liverpool shirts even commiserated with Lamps.
But Almaty weren't to be denied. Staying patient, the breakthrough came, and a great goal it was. Alex "Don't pass to me when you're running at me!" O'Donovan, running down the middle towards Gav, passed it to him. Gav had made a great run in from the right and got on the end of the pass. It was great composure from O'Donovan to find the pass considering he must have been knackered after being on the pitch for more than his usual 17 minute allocation.

The game wasn't over yet though. The security blanket of the third goal proved elusive. "SafeGafferHands" wanted to come out from goal but "Lamps" didn't really want to go in goal with the score delicately poised. Almaty lost their way slightly when Alex "Row Z" O'Donovan blazed his beloved Nike Tiempo Classic® II FIFA Match Ball Size 5 into a tree outside the ground. The replacement balls were substandard and caused a loss of cohesion in the interplay...

Almaty got used to the kiddies ball eventually and finally could relax when "Crouchy" completed his hat-trick, beating his man then scoring with his left foot while falling over, baby giraffe-like.
Fuzzball were a broken side by now and there were plenty of goals to be had, even though there was not much time left. Espey scored with a trademark drive and Alex "25 minutes effort" O'Donovan scored the goal of the game. A great team move saw the now-outfield Gaffer find Morgan on the left, Morgan switched play to "SP" on the right, "SP" rolled the ball down the line to "Crouchy"'s feet and he laid it off to Alex who was rushing through the centre, for once beating the fat lad for pace...
5-1 in the end, and a much improved performance from Almaty. After the match, "Gaffer" attributed the victory and performance to Almaty's "fitness, dominance, determination and patience".
Results elsewhere went Almaty's way with table-topping rivals Whitford and Slievenamon drawing 2-2, meaning Almaty return to the top of the pile. Citco, meanwhile, slumped to a dispiriting 9-1 defeat, and to compound their woes, talismanic Citco legend Nigel "Nige" Wilkins will miss the next two matches.
As for Almaty, it was a good all-round display with the goals shared out among three of the lads, with Tadhg "Hit me" O'Connell hitting the post twice. Morgan "Axel" Foley also had a great game both going forward and with superb, tireless tracking back. "SafeGafferHands" was solid in goal, and luckily none of his mad dashes out of his area ended in tears...

"Gaffer" and Tadhg are now jetting off to Vegas for a well-earned mid-season break (that blog post will write itself...) meaning Almaty's strength in depth will be tested for next week's clash with The Codgers who nicked a draw in the match earlier in the season. James "Romantic getaway with the lads" G will still be enjoying spectacular sunsets in Santorini next week also so Dr Phil may be recalled from his loan spell with This Is A Made Up Name FC.

Week 7: Almaty Athletic 0 Whitfords 4
Déjà vu
For the first time this season Almaty Gaffer, "Gaffer", had a full squad to select for the clash against Whitfords but that wasn't enough to prevent Almaty's heaviest defeat in its short but glorious history. Gav "tall boy slim" Jeffery had recovered from his knee injury and Keith "S-pí" had hired a mechanic. The weather conditions, however, had not improved on last week's wind and rain.
There was a certain sense of déjà vu about this game. Similar to last season Almaty were flying high after their first six games of the season but came undone in the final game of the first round.
The team talk was simple: don't concede an early goal. Alas, it was in one ear and out the other! Five minutes in (and for the fourth game in a row) Almaty conceded early on. "Safehands" pass into midfield took a nasty bobble on the astroturf and conveniently fell to the Whitford striker who made no mistake with his finish. Oh for fu...
Almaty battled back and came close to equalising when a Gav "slim boy tall" Jeffery effort rebounded back off the far post. This was to be a turning point - disaster struck again as confusion in the Almaty defence allowed the Whitford striker nip in from a long-ball to make it 2-0.
The half-time team talk was subdued. The Almaty players knew a big effort was required to turn the game around. A few minutes into the second half, another Whitfords long-ball deflected off Spratt's hand into the Whitford's strikers path. Spratt hesitated (assuming the ref was going to blow for a free) and in the meantime the Whitford striker had laid off to the oncoming midfielder to slot home.
Almaty fans were left in a state of disbelief when they saw their team concede a fourth. A Whitford strike rebounded back off the post and deflected off Sweetnam and rolled across the goal-line for the Whitford striker to nip in at the back.
A consolation goal was not forthcoming and to be honest was not deserved. Almaty came across a resilient Whitford defence and lacked the guile to break them down. Whitford weren't particularly creative, in fact they didn't really create anything themselves, but Almaty's four gifts were gratefully accepted and they were comfortable defending deep and in numbers to stifle Almaty's attacks. It was a bitter pill for Almaty fans to swallow who are used to seeing their team succeeding.
In what is sure to get him in trouble with the ALFA, Almaty Gaffer refused to attend the post-match conference. A source close to the beleaguered manager has said that he got straight on the phone to the one they called "Doctor" to see if he could help "cure" the Almaty crisis.
The victory now puts Whitfords level on points with Almaty at the half-way stage. Assuming results go their way for the next six games Almaty will be set for yet another epic end of season finale. The question is, will they have the balls for it this season?

Almaty Athletic 3 Gliebenhagg FC 2
A Plum??
Wet, cold, windy and dark; one could have been forgiven for thinking it was the middle of winter. These were the conditions for the mid-summer clash between league leaders Almaty Athletic and Gliebenhagg FC.

It was a historic day for Almaty Athletic. For the first time in their prestigious history, the Prod brigade were in the minority, with only 25% of the first team squad for the night consisting of True Blues; Spratt and Sweetnam. To make up for the lack of Prods, Tiger McTadhg was rechristened “Todd” by Rev Alex.
Almaty were without their talismanic striker, Gav "Jan Koller, not Jurgen Kohler, Ant!" Jeffery who was suffering from a knee injury sustained in a Sumo wrestling match on Saturday night. Keith "S-pee" Espey was also ruled out due to "mechanical failure of his machinery". It was a new one to add to the Gaffer's list of excuses. On the plus side Morgan "WHO ARE YA?" Foley was welcomed back into the fold after a lengthy absence.
Tadhg "Utility-man" O'Connell was selected to solve Almaty's striking crisis, with Alex "Team-Talk" O'Donovan backing him up in midfield. The back line consisted of Billy "Balls" Murphy, "Jemima" Butler and Morgan "Axel" Foley. James "Ronaldo" G and Gaffer Spratt were the secret weapons to be unleashed from the bench...
The boys in blue nearly opened the scoring after a couple of minutes when Butler ruefully spurned a decent chance, dragging a shot wide after being put in the clear by Sir Alexander. It was left to the ref to tell him “That was shit!”
The Almaty management team were left pulling their hair out minutes later after the team conceded an early goal for third time in as many games. Safehands was given no chance after a shot from the Gliebenhagg striker deflected wildly off Foley.

Almaty huffed and puffed with most of the ball, but no real attacking thrust. However the breakthrough eventually came a couple of minutes later when Lord-Lieutenant Alexander turned superbly and finished with a plum.
[I went through Gaffer's draft to fix the typos but I decided to leave that one in... a plum?! - Lamps]
Field Marshal Sir Alexander of Rockmount VC OBE was involved in two bizarre incidents shortly before half-time. Firstly, he passed to Jim not realising that Jim was not actually on the field of play at the time. From the resulting Gliebenhagg throw-in Alex decided to tie-in his laces leaving Almaty short in defence. To compound matters Alex was given a fat lip when “Cavalier” Spratt attempted to head a long ball. The collision resulted the Gliebenhagg forward breaking free, however “Safehands” stood his ground superbly and made a crucial block to deny an almost certain goal.
Half time came and went in silence, as Almaty players reflected on the fact that they would have to lift their game for the second half. That and they were afraid of angering Alexander.
In the second half, "Jane" Butler came close to putting Almaty ahead when his shot from a tight angle was brilliantly tipped onto the post and behind for a corner... not the first time their keeper made a superb save.
However, the breakthrough finally came when Alexander the Great nearly picked out "Lamps" with a ‘nearly great ball’, it broke to Galvin who went down the right, deployed a trick from his box to make a yard of space before pinging in the cross for "Lamps" to slot home to much relief! "Lamps" normal “hop, skip, and a jump” celebrations were somewhat subdued after the Sarong revelations.
Unfortunately Almaty conceded another deflected goal. The ball hit Lamps’s shins, spun into the corner, giving poor SH no chance. Questions were asked whether Lamps could have closed down the player quicker to which he mumbled "Sorry lads, yes, I guess I could have technically closed the player down with greater velocity, sorry, sorry..."
Almaty fans were left wondering whether it was going to be one of those games in which their team dominate possession but fail to win due to some defensive errors and missed chances. Their worries were converted into celebrations however when “Todd” O’Connell was slipped through. He managed to brush of the Gliebenhagg defender with his considerable weight and smashed the ball into the top corner with his considerable strength. The unrehearsed celebration saw Alex mount Tadhg before starting to whip him whilst bellowing “Well done Todd! Well done Todd!” An Almaty spokesperson confirmed in a statement released later that evening that “despite all the naked pictures, sarong wearing and enthusiastic goal celebrations, Almaty players are all straight as laces”!
Almaty saw out the remaining few minutes in a professional manner with composed passing, some tough tackling and cleverly failing to retrieve stray balls from the other pitches. Almaty’s unbeaten run has now stretched to six games and sees them at the top of the table. In their final home game of the season next week they meet Whitford who are currently second in the league.
There were notable performances by Morgan who was solid on his return and from Billy who had an inspired spell when he made some superb tackles. JamesG moved to second on the Universe's All-Time List of Assists, behind Mother Teresa. However it was “Safehands” who picked up the gong for man-of-the-match; his crucial saves ensured Almaty took all three points.

Almaty Athletic 6 Pints 0
SENSATIONAL SPRATT SCORES SIX!
Almaty Athletic remained top of the table after a resounding victory over Pints. Amazingly, Spratt netted a double hat-trick in a six goal romp! The first was an unstoppable free-kick which rifled into the top corner. This was followed shortly by a left-footed half volley on the turn. The first hat-trick was completed when Spratt showed off his class by rounding two defenders and then nutmegging the Pints keeper.
The second half started the way the first half did with a Spratt bicycle-kick from just outside the area given the Pints keeper no chance. Five minutes later Spratt showed composure again to guide a header in off the post to make it five. The cream of the crop came in the last minute when Spratt's spotted the Pints keeper off his line... the forty-yard lob was sublime!
Spratt is now the team's joint top-scorer alongside Gav "Crouchy" Jeffers.
In other news, the club has said that they will block any effort by the German FA to entice Gaffer Spratt to guide them in their 2010 World Cup Camp. A source close to the Gaffer has said that Spratt is honoured to be linked to such a prestigious job but his priority is to bring some silverware to the Almaty trophy cabinent.
Next week match is against Gliebenhagg FC.

Week 4: Almaty Athletic 3 Slievenamon 2
ALMATY EDGE SLEIVE IN FIVE GOAL THRILLER
As reported by Jeremy "Triple Vodka and West Coast Cooler please" Sweetnam
Almaty emerged victorious from this clash of two of the premier sides in this year’s league with a performance of style and substance that has vanquished the memories of last season’s near misses against similar opposition and has seen bookies slashing their title winning odds.
With defensive rock Keith “Daisy Cutter” Espey still missing due to “other commitments” (SP: 1. Almaty, 2. Work, 3. GF; NOT 1. Work, 2. GF, 3. Almaty) it was left to Tadhg “not afraid to put his foot through it” O’Connell to fill the void left by the former Leeds legend. With Billy “f*ck off Dawson” Murphy on the treatment table, Almaty were happy* to welcome back “Lamps” Butler after a two week sojourn in Greek fatcamp. Phil “It’s Smith with an ‘i’ you twat” Smith continued to provide more than adequate cover in midfield.
* hmmm, would we say ‘happy’, would we……?
In an evening of shocks, “Lamps” startled everybody by comfortably fitting into his shiny new Uhlsport shorts. Reports that Jer “Big Nev with an emphasis on the “Big” Sweetnam will be packed off to Greek fatcamp for two weeks have been denied by the bubbly / jolly / loveable shot stopper.
The game started at a frantic pace with both sides trying to play some good stuff. Despite not being their normal fluid selves Almaty still managed to display a little more composure and poise on the ball. Slieve were a useful outfit though and it was noticeable how little time Almaty’s creative influences had on the ball in general play. In what must be developing into a worrying trend for management at Almaty, they once again conceded first, and in all too familiar circumstances, as Alex “Phil never gets caught out dallying like that” O’Donovan was caught out dallying on a pass from Tadhg. Ever alive to the sniff of a chance Slieve pored forward and finished well in the bottom right hand corner. 0-1.
Almaty were more than a match for their illustrious opponents, however the better chances in the first half all fell to Slieve, who hit the post from distance and forced a useful one on one save from Jer “Lev Yashin / Dino Zoff / Renat Dassayev / Peter Schmeichel / Big Nev - take your pick” Sweetnam. A mistimed jump from Phil “Alex would have made it his” Smith allowed Slieve to nip in for another chance, this time a looping header which bounced off the top of the cross bar. At the other end, Almaty looked worrying toothless with only a couple of half chances, spurned by “Lamps” Butler and James “the Caucasian Kanu” Galvin, to show for all their possession, the latter an audacious attempted lob of the stranded Slieve keeper.
Slieve continued to press hard and there was no doubt that this contest had a far more even look about it than perhaps any other match up Alamty had played in to date. Slieve knew their stuff, as demonstrated by their repeated hurling of throw ins at the near post in search of a deflection as well as a shameless Hand of God intervention which, if Tomasz had not been paying attention, could have yielded more tangible results. Some aggressive tackling from both sides, particularly from Alex “If Phil is getting ratty then so will I” O’Donovan, served only to heighten tensions as the game ebbed and flowed at both ends.
Then, on the stroke of half time, Grzegorz allowed one more Almaty throw in, even as the crowd bayed for a whistle. Somehow the otherwise resolute Slieve defence switched off, allowing Alex “You wouldn’t see Phil control, turn and finish superbly like that” O’Donovan time and space to control, turn and finish superbly. 1-1. And a titanic second half loomed.
Almaty began the second half with some conviction and they were soon rewarded as more fine interplay culminated with an excellent goal from Gav “Crouchy – but who will I be once he leaves the fields of Anfield Road?” Jeffery. Again though Almaty switched off defensively, leaving Slieve a route back into the game as Gaffer “Do as I say not as I do” Spratt was caught badly in possession. Slieve accepted the gift and slotted home off the post. 2-2. And the match was now on a knife edge.
The tension mounted as Phil “If Alex is getting ratty then so will I” Smith allowed his frustrations to boil over at a hapless Ludwik, who, despite coming from a proud country which has survived decades of fascist / commie oppression, must surely have pined for those halcyon days as he found himself at the receiving end of an unprecedented tirade from Phil “I wish I could do this in hockey” Smith.
Fine saves from Jer “Jose Luis Chilavert / Pat Jennings / Petr Cech – take your pick” Sweetnam followed, the first from a free kick and the second from a well directed cross shot. Then another quick break up-field ended with “The Caucasian Kanu” finishing expertly to re-establish a one goal lead.
There was still time for a further save from Jer “Shilts / Brucey / Gianluigi Buffon / Gordon Banks – again, take your pick” Sweetnam and some backs to the wall stuff as tempers continued to teeter on the brink of all out confrontation. Slieve grew increasingly desperate but this time the Almaty defence, ably marshalled by “Not afraid to put his foot through it” and “Gaffer” held firm.
There will be few sterner examinations than this in the coming season, and, unlike last year, Almaty were able convert possession into points against a very useful experienced side. For Almaty then, the real test will be in converting dominance into further wins and eliminating their worrying tendency to concede soft goals. Now if SP can just get his priorities right…

Week 3: Almaty Athletic 5 Citco 2
There was something about this particular Tuesday night that made the adrenaline pump and the element of anticipation hit force 5 on the scale. Was it because Ireland were playing the Ba-Ba’s in a meaningless friendly or was it because the new series of Grey’s Anatomy is only a week away? None of the above, I’m afraid, it could only be week 3 of Astro-soccer-league, the greatest league in the universe where a person’s true character is scrutinised and weakness is not tolerated.
This week opponents were Citco Group, details were sketchy about the opponents but The Sprattman (himself a renowned financial guru of the Eddie Hobbs/Eddie O’Sullivan lovechild vain with a seasoning of German efficient good looks) commented that “The Citco Group is a worldwide group of independent financial service providers, comprised of international banks, trust and fund services companies. For over sixty years, Citco Group companies have served the growing needs of a diverse client base from its network of international offices”.
Anyway, Almaty’s form in the run up to this encounter had been mixed in the opening 2 games, with a very poor showing last week against the codgers, a bottom of the barrel rotten apple outfit who were made to look like Granny Smiths finest selection. Almaty had a strong squad to choose from:
1. Ger ‘posh spice’ Sweetman
2. Billy ‘no-mates’ Murphy
3. Tadhg ‘Extreme Makeover’ O’Connell
4. James ‘Billy Troy’ Galvin
5. Antony ‘Von-Trap’ Spratt
6. Alex ‘token catholic’ O’ Donovan
7. Phil ‘Smyth with a Y?’ Smyth
8. Gavin ‘Fabbrica Italiana Automobili Torino’ Jeffries
Citco form coming into this crunch game had been abysmal with 2 straight defeats. On paper the squad looked solid with hard men Peter ‘20 Carrolls’ Carroll, Nigel ‘Mr. Citco’ Wilkins and Mark ‘Turn coat’ Dawson in the squad. Before the game, the referee questioned the Citco goalkeeping arrangements as it looked as if they had 2 goal keepers on the pitch, this issue was clarified when it turned out the goalkeeper was just fairly big boned.
And so to the match, Almaty set about their task in a disciplined manner trying to assert their carpet football quick passing style on the game. However, good possession didn’t convert into any goals and they conceded the first goal after about 10 minutes. A Citco long ball was won in the air by the dangerous aerial supreme threat of ‘20 Carrolls’ who flicked it past ‘Posh Spice’ in the Almaty goal. Von-Traps calculator trajectory maths ability didn’t do him much good as he was easily beaten in the air. This was the only blemish in another wise fine game for the young protestant of German extract.
The deficit was cancelled out fairly quickly. Yes, the equaliser came after quick thinking from the impressive self proclaimed ‘Dr. Phil’. His short pass from a quick free kick to Alex on the edge of the area was ruthlessly hit with a right-foot volley penetrating the back of the Citco net with Big Boy Brosnan scampering back like a bulldog chasing skirt.
Citco were not to be undermined, their hard tackling, disciplined direct style once again paid off, with them retaking the lead. An Almaty throw to the only catholic on the team, Alex, who cheaply given away when he claimed he heard a whistle. The busy Fergus from Citco pounced on the error and the ball was worked into the Almaty net giving Citco a 2nd goal and more importantly the lead!!!
A James G special (double nut-meg followed by a triple drag-back) after some good inter-passing put the Anglicans back on level pegging.
So it was, our immigrant referee blew for half time against his will, saying that in his country only women take a break at a half time, real men keep playing.
Strong but level headed words were said at half time by the Almaty management, identifying the problem areas and reiterating the ‘no mistakes’/‘hard work’/’total football’ attitude that would win them the game.
And so it resumed, the second half, a half where Almaty would show their true metal, the tempo was raised and the passing became crisper
However, Citco came back strongly with a fair share of the possession and numerous corners but never looked liked opening up a dogged Almaty rearguard. A now all too seldom run by the ageing Alex (some say he has no age just a number) from the middle led to the lead goal. After a gap opened in the Citco defence Alex laid off to the self hyped ‘Professor Phil’ to finish with a low drive to make it 3-2 to the distinguished gentlemen.
The 4th goal followed quickly; a goalkeeping mistake by Big Boy Brosnan in the Citco goal left him stranded miles from goal allowing great vision by the modest ‘Mr. Phil’ to score on left touch line just inside the opponents half.
Before the referee had time to blow ‘God Save the Queen’ on his whistle a 5th goal from the Almaty Chargers finished the game as a contest. Again a neat finish by the soon to be ‘Sir Phil’ again left the mammoth CITCO keeper flapping like Dustin’s big brother.
The game was played in a good spirit overall with some friends and comrades and members of the secret protestant stonecutters club playing on opposing sides. The early pressure from Citco with their direct style was in contrast to the gravity carpet style of Almaty. An elbow by Citco keeper Mini-van Brosnan on ‘candyfloss’ Galvin in the last minute of the game was out of quilter with the good natured way the game was played.
Later the troubled keeper was quoted as ‘wanting to break the nose of that guy with the perm’. Breaking someone’s nose is not a pleasant experience and was condoned by one and all as bad sportsmanship of the highest order. Having said that Almaty are willing to forgive and are open to giving the big man a group hug and share the love. A spokesperson from the Blue machine was quoted as ‘wishing him well and hopefully solving his off the pitch problems sooner rather than later’.
An F.A.I. incident room has been set up to investigate with a Star Trek Genesis report forthcoming on the matter.
Quotes from the gaffer’s post match conference:
• “I hope the Injury to Billy isn’t too serious; he is an intricate element of the Almaty football factory”
• “A much improved team performance but must be carried out on a weekly basis, like all great teams”
Man-of the match:

Week 2: Almaty Athletic 2 The Codgers 2
Almaty players and fans were left frustrated last night as hopes of a 100% record were dashed as they drew 2-2 with the The Codgers. The team was without “Axel” Foley (injured), “Lamps” (fat camp in Greece) and SP (who reportedly couldn’t miss out on the season finale of Desperate Old Dolls). However, Phil Smith was drafted in to bolster the squad after an impressive guest appearance last week. The new Almaty home kit was also unveiled last night - pic to follow.
The team started reasonably well but failed to find their rhythm. Disaster struck on the 13th min when Tiger O’Connell took a quick goal-kick to “Carsley” O’Donovan who squandered position on the edge of the area. The Old Codger had an open goal to pass into as “Safehands” was out of position as he had left his goal to take the goal kick. Strike 1! With their backs against the wall Almaty began to up the tempo of the game. A few minutes later after a mix-up in the Old Codgers defense Almaty’s hat-trick hero from last week, Gav, was left with egg on his face as he somehow managed to put the ball wide when faced with an open goal. Strike 2! The increased pressure paid off when Almaty equalised close to half-time when “Crouchy” made amends for his previous effort.
Almaty came out for the second half with a hunger for the win. They got their just rewards after 15 mins of sustained pressure when Phil Smith knocked a nice lay-back to make it 2-1. However, all their hard work was undone in the last minute when the Old Codgers won a free-kick. The long range effort somehow managed to make its way through the mass of bodies. With his view obstructed "Safehands" saw it late and was only able to get a hand to the ball but unfortunately it feel straight into the oncoming Old Codger’s striker. Strike 3!
There were remonstrations with the ref after the game after the bruising given to “Ronaldo” Galvin. The Ref was quoted as saying “Hey James my man, I gave you a free-kick for every foul man”.
The Gaffer will have to raise the players’ spirits before the big game next week against local rivals, Citco (who lost again last night by the way!). Citco player, Dawson, was quoted as saying last night that “I’d just love it if we beat them…. I’d just love it!”

Week 1: Almaty Athletic 6 Fuzzball FC 1
Almaty Athletic Squad v Fuzzball FC, sporting our rarely-seen Third Kit...
(minus Gaffer who took the pic)
After last year’s disastrous start to the season, Almaty were desperate to hit the ground running in their opening game of the new season against Fuzzball FC. However, the nerves got the better of the players in the first 10 mins as they failed to find their rhythm. Fuzzball created a few half-chances but were unable to find the back of the net. James “Seth” G, who had started on the bench, was brought on and provided the spark to ignite the team. Gav bagged a quick-fire brace, and this was followed up with a rare right-footed goal by “Seth”.
The only other notably incident of the first half was bizarre encounter between a Fuzzball player and the ref in which the ref squared up to the player and invited him “to have a go”!
Half Time: 3-0
With a three goal cushion it was decided to give “Safehands” a chance to prove his worth outfield. He silenced his critics on the 45th min when he slotted home to make it 4-0 after a great reverse pass, again with the right foot, from “Seth”.
Not to be outdone by his great rival, Jim “Lamps” Butler made it five when he buried a shot from a tight angle, after great work by Gav to draw the defence away and then find the pass.
Fuzzball’s pacy striker troubled the Almaty defence and was unlucky not to open their scoring when his shot rebounded back off the stanchion. However, Almaty striker “Crouchy” laid down his marker for the Top Scorer award by wrapping up his hat-trick with a determined finish, despite claims of handball from the opposition. They were clearly still afraid of the ref so their protests were a bit more muted this time!
Fuzzball got a late consolation goal when their pacy striker skipped by a few players and rifled it home past “Safehands” (who had resumed his normal station).
Almaty could have had more with both “Crouchy” and “Lamps” hitting the post in the second half, as did Philly Smith in the first.
The gloss was taken off the victory as it emerged late last night that Alex "True Blue" O'Donovan had suffered a knee injury. It is uncertain how long the injury will keep him sidelined for.
Oh yeah, and Citco lost. Heh heh heh...
Man of the match: Phil Smith (notable mention to Gav for the hat-trick and JamesG for assists and a goal)
Goal of the game: They were all good, except Gav's 3rd!
